In a heartfelt gesture, former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya observed a fast with his Muslim friends during the holy month of Ramadan and shared a picture of their iftar on social media.

Jayasuriya, a devout Buddhist, revealed that he has been following this tradition of fasting with his Muslim friends since his school days and has continued to do so ever since.

“Fasted today along with my Muslim friends — a little tradition I’ve followed since school days during Ramadan,” he wrote in his post on X, along with a picture from their iftar gathering.

Fans from around the world expressed their admiration for the cricket legend’s inclusive spirit.

"That's great, Sanath! It’s wonderful that you’ve maintained such a meaningful tradition with your friends. Ramadan is a special time for reflection and unity. I grew up in a Muslim village as a Sinhalese, and I truly miss those days," one X user commented.

Ramadan, observed annually by Muslims worldwide, begins with the sighting of the moon. Those fasting have their first meal, suhoor, before dawn and break their fast with iftar at sunset.

Between suhoor and iftar, they refrain from eating or drinking anything while focusing on prayers and good deeds.

Fasting has been widely studied for its effects on both mental and physical well-being. While Ramadan offers Muslims a time for spiritual growth, it also provides health benefits by promoting moderation and preventing overindulgence, key factors in maintaining overall well-being.
