Former Pakistani cricketer Umar Akmal has revealed that he never missed a fast, even when playing cricket matches or series during the holy month of Ramadan. He also shared that his former teammates Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan encouraged players not to skip fasting, considering it a sacred duty.
Speaking to a private TV channel after distributing food to the needy during Ramadan, Umar Akmal said:
"During ODI and Test matches held in Ramadan, I never skipped my fast, though I may have done so once or twice in exceptional circumstances."
He further stated that his senior teammates, Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan, advised him against skipping fasts, emphasizing that fasting is a divine blessing.
"They told me, ‘Umar, do not skip your fast because it is a privilege for those who are fortunate. If we play while fasting, we will have more energy, and Allah will further enhance our performance,’” Akmal recalled.

He expressed gratitude towards his senior players for guiding him not only in cricket but also in religious matters.
During the interview, the host asked Akmal about Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami, who did not fast during the Champions Trophy, despite other senior players observing Ramadan.
In response, Akmal said, "I cannot comment on that because everyone knows their own body. The weather in Dubai is extremely hot, and he did what he thought was best for himself. Islam is not overly strict; if he has stopped fasting, I pray that he resumes it in the future."
When asked about his future in cricket, Akmal revealed that he is still working hard to make a comeback to the national team.
"I am still making efforts to return to the team. Right now, I don't have the intention to retire. Whenever I feel exhausted from cricket, I will officially announce my retirement," he concluded.
