India opener Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to hospital with a stomach problem ahead of their next T20I World Cup match against Namibia.
Citing a senior cricket board official, media reports said on Wednesday that the left-handed batter is currently under medical care in Delhi and remains doubtful for Thursday’s Group A clash against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The 25-year-old reportedly missed a training session after struggling with a stomach issue that began during India’s opening game in Mumbai. He was taken to hospital on Tuesday as a precaution. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the team management is closely monitoring his recovery.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had earlier hinted at the issue, telling reporters that Abhishek had “still got a few issues with his tummy”.
“We hope that he’ll be available for the game in a few days’ time,” ten Doeschate added, suggesting the team remains optimistic but cautious.
Abhishek, known for his aggressive approach at the top of the order, is seen as a crucial figure in India’s bid to retain their T20 World Cup crown. Although he was dismissed for zero in the win over the United States, he had been in impressive form in the build-up to the tournament.
India’s campaign is set to intensify with a high-voltage encounter against Pakistan scheduled for Sunday, making Abhishek’s fitness a matter of added importance for the hosts.
