The symbolic Doomsday Clock, which tracks how close humanity is to global catastrophe, was moved forward to 89 seconds to midnight on Tuesday, the closest it has ever been to an imminent planetary disaster.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS), a Chicago-based nonprofit organisation, advanced the clock by one second, warning that the world is hurtling toward destruction due to unchecked climate change, technological misuse, and geopolitical conflicts.

Head of the Science and Security Board of the Atomic Scientists, Daniel Holz stated that moving the clock closer to midnight serves as "a warning to all world leaders."

Holz emphasised that meaningful progress has not been made to address the threats to human existence, so the clock is being moved forward.

He further stressed that advancing the clock should be taken as a dire signal of escalating dangers, leaving no room for error.

As per reports, this marks the first time the world has faced such an extreme level of risk.

"Conflict in the Middle East threatens to spiral out of control into a wider war without warning," the BAS statement warned.

The scientists also raised concerns about the misuse of technology for political and destructive purposes, which they believe threatens the very survival of humanity.

"Systems that incorporate artificial intelligence in military targeting have been used in Ukraine and the Middle East, and several countries are moving to integrate artificial intelligence into their militaries."

Additionally, they highlighted the increasing outbreak of diseases, ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and other compounding crises that could lead to a nuclear war and pose grave challenges to global stability.

The BAS underscored that the United States, China, and Russia possess the resources and power to "destroy civilisation", making it their responsibility to prevent the world from plunging into complete disaster.
