LAHORE: The Punjab government, under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is set to launch a "Say No to Plastic" campaign starting June 5, according to spokesperson Marriyam Aurangzeb. This initiative aims to combat the spread of deadly diseases linked to plastic use.
Aurangzeb announced that all preparations for strict enforcement against the manufacture, distribution, and sale of illegal plastic bags have been finalized. She emphasized the severe health risks posed by plastic, including cancer and other hazardous diseases, as well as its contribution to environmental pollution.
Starting June 5, crackdowns will target factories producing illegal plastic products. Aurangzeb mentioned that these factories have already received multiple warnings. Additionally, stringent actions will be taken against hotels, restaurants, and other food outlets using plastic bags after the deadline.
Violators will face complete crackdowns, resulting in legal actions and hefty fines. The Punjab government has declared that polythene bags thinner than 75 microns and single-use plastic containers will be entirely banned.
Aurangzeb also highlighted the upcoming awareness campaign, "Plastic is Death," aimed at educating the public about the dangers of plastic use. Public service messages will be shared on social media, and written notices about the plastic ban will be displayed in shopping malls, bus stations, parks, public transport, and other public areas.
To promote sustainable alternatives, the campaign will encourage the use, production, and sale of cotton bags and other substitutes for plastic bags.
