Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, 89, was discharged from a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday morning, a day after Indian media declared his demise.
The actor, who was admitted for breathlessness on October 31, had been under observation for nearly two weeks and will now continue his recovery at home, according to doctors treating him.
A senior doctor from Breach Candy Hospital, Prof. Pratit Samdani, told journalists that Dharmendra will be receiving home-based care as per the family’s wishes. He also requested that the public and media respect the actor’s privacy during this period.
In an official statement, Dharmendra’s family said the actor had been discharged and would recuperate at home. They appealed to fans and media outlets to refrain from speculation and to allow him and his loved ones some privacy. The statement also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and well wishes for his continued good health.

The news of his discharge came just a day after several Indian media outlets falsely reported Dharmendra’s death, citing unnamed “sources.” The misinformation quickly spread online, prompting an outpouring of tributes — including one from lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar, who later deleted his post once the truth emerged.
Dharmendra’s daughter, actor Esha Deol, took to Instagram to clarify that her father was alive and recovering, urging journalists to stop spreading fake news. Hema Malini also criticised sections of the media for publishing unverified reports and called for greater responsibility in news coverage.
