Renowned actor Javeria Saud defended former cricketer Sarfaraz Ahmed after he was questioned about his English-speaking skills during live show, emphasising that “we should learn Urdu first.”

During a Ramadan transmission on a private TV channel, a caller  asked Sarfaraz, “Why do you seem nervous while speaking English?”

Before Sarfaraz could respond, Javeria came up with an immediate response, saying, “Even I get nervous when speaking English because we are Pakistanis, and our national language is Urdu.” 

“First, we should learn to speak Urdu correctly. Many of us don’t, and speaking English is not something to take pride in.”

She maintained that people around the world prioritise their own language and “become annoyed when they are spoken to in English.” 

Sarfaraz then explained why he sometimes struggles with English, stating, “We are not used to speaking English regularly, which makes us nervous,” adding, “A live show is not as easy as people think.” 

Sarfaraz recalled the final match of the Under-19 World Cup in 2006, when he was leading the team. The former captain said, “We were going to play the final match against India in Sri Lanka, and I was not tense about the match, but I was confused about what I would say during the toss, because it was being broadcast live.” 

However, he acknowlesdged that such challenges are part of the jounrey and that confidence improves with experince.
