Pakistani fashion designer Deepak Perwani recently shared his observations on the differences between life in Pakistan and India, describing the neighboring country as more 'colorful' and 'dynamic.'
In an interview, Perwani expressed his disappointment over the limited avenues for enjoying civic life in Pakistan, where public spaces remain less accessible for both men and women.
“Comparing life in Pakistan with India, and I’m not speaking from a place of privilege, as all humans are equal and lead similar lives, but I think they (Indians) have it better,” Perwani remarked.
“People are happier there,” he added. “Women can freely walk and ride bicycles on the streets. A rickshaw driver has Uber, and a pani puri vendor has tap-to-pay options,” he said, highlighting the liveliness and adaptability of Indian society.
He emphasised that the issue is not about wealth but about the quality of life.
“Every person wants to live in an environment where they can enjoy life, whether it’s walking peacefully on a street or visiting a park,” Perwani explained.
Reflecting on Pakistani cities, Perwani noted that life in Lahore is comparatively better due to its historical development, which was designed for civic enjoyment.
However, he expressed disappointment with Karachi’s deteriorating infrastructure, saying it doesn’t offer the same opportunities for enjoying public spaces.
Deepak also shared his experiences visiting Indian cities such as Jaipur and Jodhpur, describing them as vibrant and colorful. Comparing these cities to his experiences in Pakistan, he highlighted the stark contrast in infrastructure and public life.
