Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan spoke out about the discrimination he experienced in India due to his Muslim identity in an old interview. The video gained attention as Saif remains hospitalised after a life-threatening attack by a burglar at his home.
The incident reportedly occurred at Saif's residence in the early hours of Thursday, around 2:30 am, when an intruder entered Khan’s home. The actor engaged in a scuffle to prevent the burglary, during which he was stabbed.
The Hum Tum star underwent urgeries and is currently receiving further medical treatment at the hospital.
Indian media reported that Khan suffered multiple injuries over his body. However, his back is stable following surgery, and he is able to move his hands and legs. His condition remains stable.
In the interview, Saif was asked if he had ever encountered discrimination while visiting Western countries, to which he responded that he faced no such issues abroad but experienced it in Mumbai.
“You try to buy a flat as a Muslim in Juhu (a suburb of Mumbai), and everyone will say that they don’t sell flats to Muslims,” he revealed.
Saif acknowledged the existing religious tensions in India, stating that vulnerable communities often bear the brunt of such discrimination.
“If a man fights his wife, two brothers fight each other, and two countries fight each other, then two religions can also clash. It’s not a big deal,” he said, adding, “Peace and understanding are unusual.”
He recounted an experience while house hunting in an Indian neighborhood, where he was told Muslims were not allowed to buy property there. He eventually sought a house in another area.
Although Saif didn’t deem the experience to be a significant issue, he remarked, “It’s not a big deal, but it’s also not a good thing.”
In a separate report, Indian media identified Saif Ali Khan's attacker as Mohammad Sharif ul Islam, who was arrested during a police manhunt in Thane.
Sharif ul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant, had been living in India under various identities. He was found sleeping in a dense mangrove cluster near a labor camp in Kasarvadavali, Thane. When police attempted to wake him, he tried to flee but was apprehended.
