Renowned actor Nadia Jamil recently shared how her friend changed her perspective on grief, helping her cope with the loss of her father.
In a video circulating on social media, Nadia spoke about the pain of losing one’s parents, admitting that she once believed she wouldn’t be able to survive after her father’s death.
She described her father as a loving and affectionate figure who nurtured her in a way that many girls could only dream of.
However, after his passing, Nadia met a friend in Saudi Arabia who introduced her to a life-altering perspective on grieving the loss of loved ones.
“My friend, who had also lost her 15-year-old son, said something that changed everything,” Nadia shared. “She told me, ‘We say Alhamdulillah when someone we love passes away.’”
Recalling her friend’s story, Nadia said, “When my 15-year-old son died, a Pakistani woman came to me, weeping and wailing, asking how I could bear the loss. I wanted to teach her something, so I took her gold bangle and told her to ask for it back. When she did, I returned it to her.”
Her friend then explained: “You trusted me with your bangle, knowing I would return it. In the same way, Allah trusted me with my son for 15 years, and now He has taken him back because it was His to begin with.”
Nadia’s friend advised her to approach grief with gratitude, saying: “Allah gave you your father for 50 years and blessed you with countless memories.”
This profound lesson shifted Nadia’s perspective. “It changed my belief from grief to Alhamdulillah. Now, I no longer experience grief in the way Western teachings, like the seven stages of grief, emphasise,” she said.
