The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new measure to facilitate freelancers by allowing them to register virtual private networks (VPNs) against mobile numbers.
This step aims to simplify the VPN registration process, particularly for those without static IP addresses, the PTA stated on Saturday.
According to the PTA, over 31,000 VPNs have already been registered, and the process can now be completed by accessing the regulatory body’s website.
The development comes after the PTA initially set a November 30 deadline for VPN registration, which was later extended to accommodate more users.
The move is part of the PTA’s crackdown on unregistered VPNs, which began in response to security concerns raised by the government.
Although the Ministry of Interior had earlier announced plans to shut down all unregistered VPNs by mid-November, a two-week "grace period" was later granted.
How to register?
The registration process requires users to submit an online form with details such as a Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), company registration, taxpayer status, and, for freelancers, documentation verifying their project or company affiliation.
The introduction of VPN registration in Pakistan has gained attention, especially after the ban on the social media site X (formerly Twitter) earlier this year, leading to increased VPN usage for bypassing restricted content.
