Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz expressed her intention to initiate talks with India to address the worsening smog, as authorities believe air pollution in India is contributing to the smog in Lahore and could be tackled through coordinated efforts from both countries.

“Winds don’t recognise borders between nations,” she said while addressing a Diwali ceremony in Lahore.

As a thick layer of smog engulfed Lahore, CM Maryam stressed that the issue goes beyond politics and should be addressed urgently, as it is impacting people's lives.

“Smog is not just a political issue; it affects human lives and requires diplomatic efforts with India to find a resolution.”

CM Maryam identified smog as a top priority and suggested reaching out to authorities in Indian Punjab through formal communication.

“I am considering writing a letter to the Chief Minister of Indian Punjab,” she said.

“This issue can only be resolved with parallel actions from both Indian and Pakistani Punjab,” she added.

The CM’s statement comes as Lahore remains one of the most polluted cities, grappling with dangerous and unhealthy smog levels.

The annual crop stubble burning in both Indian and Pakistani Punjab contributes to toxic pollution across the region just before winter.
