The current cold wave is expected to grip Karachi until January 9, with temperatures predicted to drop to single digits during this period, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted on Tuesday.
The weather forecast for today predicted that the weather would remain cold and dry for the next 24 hours. However, the minimum temperature recorded early this morning was 8°C.
The advisory shared on the Met office's website stated that the potential temperature would drop to 7 °C to 9 °C on Wednesday and 6 °C to 8 °C on Thursday.
Nothereast winds were blowing at a speed of kilometers per hour, with humidity at 27 percent.
According to reports, yesterday Karachi witnessed temperatures 2°C to 4°C colder than the recorded temperature. Temperatures in the city have remained in the single digits for the past three days.
It was being speculated that the mercury would fall to a historic low of 0°C in the port city, which would break the temperature record last witnessed on January 1934.
However, Met Chief Sardar Sarfaraz dismissed this notion, stating there is no likelihood of Karachi surpassing this record
Sardar Sarfraz said a cold snap would persist for the next one to two weeks. Daytime temperatures will barely reach 8-10°C, while nighttime temperatures may plummet to 2-4°C in some areas.
Sarfraz explained that cold winds from Quetta will sweep towards Karachi, bringing a nationwide chill. He attributed the temperature drop to a high-pressure system in the north, pushing cold air masses southward.
