Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has announced that he would give free motorcycles and cellphones to the victims of street crime to make up for their loss.

He lamented that more than 1,700 motorcycles were stolen in Karachi last year, asking citizens to bring their original Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) and First Information Report (FIR) of their stolen or snatched motorcyle or mobile phone to get free ones.

Highlighting his achievements, the governor said health insurance cards, providing up to Rs500,000 in treatment for individuals and their families, were being issued, adding that this initiative was open to anyone who meets the requirements.

Tessori said he provided ration packets to 250,000 people and hosted Iftar for 300,000 individuals at the Governor’s House in Ramazan last year. Furthermore, free IT courses will start soon, he maintained.

Karachi witnessed a surge in incidence of street crimes in the year 2023 with over 27,500 mobile phones snatched and more than 58,500 motorcycles, worth billions of rupees, snatched or stolen.

The city experienced a rate of 70 mobile phones being snatched daily, translating to 3 every hour and one every 18 minutes at gunpoint.

Over 58,500 motorcycles worth billions of rupees were stolen and snatched from citizens. The daily incidence of motorcycle theft surpassed 162, with an average of 6 motorcycles stolen or snatched every hour in the city.
