“I filmed vlog without verifying facts:” PGC student apololgises for sharing fake news regarding rape incident

A Punjab College student, whose video went viral during protests in Lahore, has apologised for spreading "false information" regarding the alleged rape of a fellow student on social media.

On Friday, the principal of Punjab College Campus 10 and a female student held a press conference where the girl explained how she recorded her video, in which she shared details of the incident.

A video of the masked female student was widely circulated online, in which she claimed that a van driver and a security guard had raped a first-year intermediate student.

“A teacher heard the cries of a female student, and another student saw her unconscious, after which she was rushed to an ambulance in critical condition,” she had alleged in the video.

She also accused the college principal and administration of covering up the sexual assault.

Following outrage on social media and widespread protests across Punjab over the controversy, the student came forward to admit that she had spread false information.

"I filmed a vlog without investigating or verifying the facts," the ICS student confessed.

She revealed that a college student group called “We Want Justice for Her” on Instagram was responsible for circulating the fake information, where her peers alleged that teachers had threatened them and confiscated their phones.

The student asserted that those posting updates about the incident were also unaware of the truth.

When asked if she was withdrawing her statement under pressure, the student denied being under any duress, saying, "I am ashamed that I shared the video without ascertaining the facts."
