KARACHI: A section of University Road will remain closed for nearly two months as part of the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP), officials said on Friday.

According to authorities, the portion between Nipa Chowrangi and the Federal Urdu University will be shut from November 10 to December 30 for the installation of new 96-inch and 72-inch pipelines under the K-IV augmentation plan.

“The closure is necessary for laying new pipelines that will improve the city’s water supply system,” a senior official stated. The affected stretch spans approximately 2.7 kilometres.

The first phase of the project covers the Nipa Chowrangi–Federal Urdu University section, while the second phase will extend from Hasan Square to Nipa Chowrangi, according to project documents.

Residents have expressed concern over the development, as University Road already faces congestion and disruptions due to the ongoing Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction. Areas such as Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Gulistan-i-Johar have been particularly affected by traffic gridlocks and dust.

Although officials have set December 30 as the completion deadline, citizens remain doubtful, citing Karachi’s frequent delays in major infrastructure projects.
