The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday issued a warning about rapid glacier melting in northern Pakistan, saying the situation could lead to floods and landslides in the coming days.

The alert covers the period from June 27 to July 3 and points to the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods and mudslides due to ongoing high temperatures and expected rainfall.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), the advisory was issued to help authorities prepare in time and protect residents, tourists and travellers in areas fed by glaciers.

The NDMA said the current weather pattern matches the seasonal forecast issued by the NEOC months ago, which had already warned about the possibility of such hazards. It said rising temperatures and rain could speed up glacier melting, leading to a sudden rise in water levels in rivers and streams.

The authority also warned that pressure on glacial lakes may increase, which could trigger outburst floods and cause damage in nearby areas.

The most vulnerable districts include Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper and Lower Chitral, and Swat, along with surrounding regions.

The NDMA said flash floods and landslides could affect highways, bridges, irrigation networks and other important infrastructure. It added that some mountain roads may be blocked temporarily and low-lying settlements could also face danger.

People living in these areas, as well as tourists, have been advised to avoid travelling near glacier-fed rivers, streams and lakes unless necessary. They have also been asked to stay updated through official weather advisories and report any unusual rise in water levels or strange glacier activity.

The NDMA has instructed provincial disaster management authorities and other departments to keep monitoring the situation and remain ready for emergency response. The public has also been encouraged to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app for updates and safety information.
