Pakistan marked the longest night of the year on December 21 as the winter solstice occurred, a key astronomical event in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) explained that the winter solstice happens annually when the Earth’s axial tilt positions the Northern Hemisphere at its maximum distance from the sun.
This results in the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
Typically occurring on December 21 or 22, the solstice represents a turning point in the Earth’s orbit, after which daylight hours gradually increase in the Northern Hemisphere.
The solstice holds cultural and spiritual significance worldwide, often symbolizing renewal and the return of light.
In many traditions, it is observed as a moment of reflection and celebration.
As daylight hours slowly extend, this astronomical event heralds the gradual transition toward spring.
