Pakistan re-elected as member of UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs

In a significant achievement, Pakistan has been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for a four-year term (2026–2029), reflecting the country’s commitment to combating the global menace of drugs.
The voting exercise took place during the resumed session of the UN’s economic arm, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
A maximum number of voters exercised their right to vote with a majority of council members voting in Pakistan's favor.

In a press release issued on Friday, Pakistan acknowledged the unwavering support of the council members, stating, “Pakistan is gratified by the resounding support received from ECOSOC.”
“It reflects the confidence and trust reposed in Pakistan to (continue playing) its active role in the CND as part of global counter-narcotics efforts and multilateral policy discourse on drug-related issues.”
In the statement, the Pakistani mission to the UN pledged to work closely with the ECOSOC members to eliminate the menace of narcotics across the world.

The country’s representative to UN stated that strengthening the CND’s role in the primary global drug policy-making body remains priority, ensuring that the international drug control efforts remain comprehensive, effective and in line with the obligations of the three UN drug control conventions.
Notably, the commission of the UN was established in 1946. Since its inception, Pakistan has played an active role in supporting the UN’s mission to oversee the implementation of international drug control policies.
