Pakistan to serve as vice-chair of UNSC counter-terrorism committee

Pakistan is set to assume key responsibilities at the United Nations Security Council in 2025, including serving as vice-chair of the counter-terrorism committee and taking on other important roles.
Pakistan will also chair the Taliban (Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) Sanctions Committee, which monitors the enforcement of UN-mandated measures such as travel bans, arms embargoes, and asset freezes against designated individuals and entities linked to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), is a critical body in the global security framework.
According to the recent development, Pakistan’s leadership of this committee signals its growing role in regional and international peace and security efforts.

Algeria will head the UNSC Counter-Terrorism Committee, with Pakistan assuming its vic-chair.
This committee played a central role in shaping global counter-terrorism strategies and coordinating member states’ efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms.
These positions place Pakistan as a key player in global dialogue and decision-making on counter-terrorism and regional peace efforts.
The development reflects a broader shift within the Security Council, where non-permanent and emerging member states are increasingly entrusted with leadership roles in key committees.

Pakistan’s new responsibilities come at a time when India has been accusing Pakistan of spreading terrorism and also linking the April 26 Pahalgam incident to Pakistan.
