The first supermoon of 2026 lit up the skies over Pakistan on Saturday evening, attracting astronomy enthusiasts to popular viewing locations.

According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), the January 3 supermoon is known as the “Wolf Moon” and marks the conclusion of a series of supermoons that began in October 2025.

Suparco said the moon’s illumination will reach 99.8% during the event, and it will appear around 6% to 7% larger than a regular full moon. The celestial body will remain prominently visible throughout the night, particularly around midnight.

Experts explained that a supermoon occurs when the moon comes closer to Earth than its average distance, making it appear larger and brighter. During Saturday’s event, the distance between the Earth and the Moon was approximately 362,312 kilometres.

Astronomers added that supermoons usually occur in sequences of three to four consecutive events. The next supermoon is expected in November 2026, with no third supermoon scheduled for this year.
