State-owned Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) on Monday announced a “pioneering” gas and condensate discovery at its operated Dolphin X-1 exploratory well in Sindh’s Sujawal district.

PPL said the discovery at Sirani Block marked the first-ever hydrocarbon find from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation in the Lower Indus Basin, opening a new hydrocarbon play in an area previously considered difficult to explore.

The company said the discovery had opened a new exploration frontier across the onshore marshy area and its possible extensions into shallow offshore, improving prospects for shallow offshore exploration in Pakistan.

According to PPL, the area had long been considered inaccessible because of its challenging geography and marshy terrain. The company said it was the first exploration and production company to overcome the terrain using specialised transition equipment to acquire seismic data.

Dolphin X-1 was spudded on April 17, 2026 and drilled to a measured depth of 3,850 metres to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the Chiltan Formation.
