The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote children’s online safety and responsible use of digital platforms in Pakistan.

According to a PTA press release, the partnership will focus on raising awareness and improving digital safety among children, parents, teachers and caregivers.

Under the agreement, the two organisations will work on a child safety programme centred on awareness, education and capacity-building. The initiative will provide parents and teachers with practical tools and resources to help children safely navigate the digital world.

The programme will include awareness material in English and local languages, training sessions at educational institutions and a nationwide outreach campaign aimed at connecting millions of families with localised online safety resources and tutorials.

PTA Chairman retired Maj Gen Hafeezur Rehman stressed the need for collective efforts and cooperation among stakeholders to protect children in an increasingly digital environment.

Dr Khawar Siddique, a member of the PTA’s compliance and enforcement team, highlighted the importance of digital literacy and responsible use of online platforms in creating a safer digital environment for children and families.

The development comes two days after Google inaugurated its local office in Pakistan, nearly four years after registering in the country. The company described the opening as a “big milestone” in its engagement with Pakistan.
