Senate gives nod to revised 27th Constitutional Amendment

The Senate has approved new changes to the 27th Constitutional Amendment with a two-thirds majority. The session, chaired by Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, presented the revised text of the amendment.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the new draft in the Senate, after which the clauses were approved one by one.
As the Law Minister presented the bill, opposition members protested by banging their desks. They continued their protest and slogan chanting throughout the clause-by-clause approval process.
Opposition senators shouted slogans such as “No to the destruction of the judiciary,” prompting the Chairman to instruct them to refrain from sloganeering.

PTI senators Falak Naz, Mirza Afridi, and Faisal Javed staged a sit-in in front of the Chairman’s dais, while other PTI members boycotted the voting process.
Senators Saifullah Abro and Ahmad Khan voted in favor of the amendment, while four JUI-F members opposed it. For Clause 2, a total of 64 votes were cast in favor and 4 against.
Following the clause-by-clause approval, division voting was conducted. During the process, bells were rung, and the entrances and exits of the Senate hall were sealed.
In the final count, 64 votes were cast in favor of the bill and 4 against.
Announcing the results, Chairman Gilani declared that the 27th Constitutional Amendment had been approved by a two-thirds majority.
