The co-chairperson of the Pakistan People's Party, Asif Ali Zardari, has accused Jemima Goldsmith, the ex-wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, of running a paid campaign to promote the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

In a recent interview, Asif Ali Zardari was asked about the popularity of PTI and its prospects of success with a two-thirds majority in the upcoming elections on February 8, 2024.

In response, the former president dismissed such speculations, attributing them to misinformation spread by 'vloggers.'

"These speculations are being fueled by vloggers residing abroad who are paid by Jemima," said Asif Zardari.

His statement irked PTI followers, leading them to express their discontent on micto-blogging platform 'X' against the remarks targeting their leader's ex-wife.

#StayStrongJemimaKhan started trending on 'X' as PTI supporters criticised Asif Ali Zardari, sharing old pictures of Jemima Khan with Imran Khan and portraying her as a 'dignified' woman.

In response, PTI supporters hurled corruption charges against Asif Zardari.

Currently, PTI is facing challenges as prominent members have either left the party or are incarcerated under various charges.

As the general elections approach, PTI has brought its lawyers to the forefront of the election campaign, given that much of the political leadership is behind the bars.

Barrister Gohar Khan was elected unopposed as the new chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on December 2, replacing incarcerated former premier Imran Khan as the party chief.

The former chairperson of PTI, Imram Khan, was ousted from power through a parliamentary vote of no confidence in April 2022. Since then, he has been embroiled in a series of charges, which he contends are politically motivated tactics by the opposition to sideline him from the upcoming general elections on February 8.

In August, Khan was found guilty of illegally selling state gifts and sentenced to three years in prison. Despite being granted bail and having his sentence suspended, he remains incarcerated in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for his involvement in the cipher case.
