In a positive development, the Lahore Education Authority has announced a monthly stipend of Rs10,000 for transgender individuals enrolled in government schools.
Specifically, those registered at Government Girls High School Garden Town will receive Rs5,000 per month as a stipend and an additional Rs5,000 as a conveyance allowance, as reported by various media outlets.
This financial support comes with the condition of maintaining an 80 percent attendance, ensuring a commitment to regular participation in the educational process.
Nayyar Iqbal, the District Education Officer (Secondary) in Lahore, emphasized that the stipend kicks in upon student registration. He also mentioned a willingness to expand the number of schools catering to transgender individuals if there is an increased demand for such educational facilities.
Classes for transgender students have been ongoing at the Garden Town school for the past year, with educational sessions scheduled on the first three days of the week.
The commitment to inclusivity extends beyond financial aid, as the students are not only provided with free education but also receive textbooks and meals.
