In a step towards women empowerment, DIG Driving Licence Branch Irfan Ali Baloch has launched an intiative called ‘Women on Wheels’ to encourage women to learn to drive themselves.

Speaking to a private news channel, Baloch said that he has introduced the 'Women on Wheels' slogan to empower women. “A woman as a mother, sister, daughter or wife has to wait for her male family member or to hire a driver to go out of the house. If she learns to drive and obtains her licence, this would eliminate her need to depend on others," he added.

"She will be able to drop her children at school, go to college, university, office, or shopping center by herself.”

The police officer elaborated his view by mentioning that he wants women to be able to drive not just to fullfil their own needs, but also to make driving a livelihood. By doing this, they can join an online taxi service through which they can support themselves and their families, he went on.

He maintained that women will feel more secure and comfortable while travelling in cars with female drivers.

Baloch said camps have been held at universities and colleges with seminars to encourage women to learn driving and get their licences. There are separate counters for women at the driving licence branch, he mentioned.
