In an effort to safeguard the society from the chaos caused by the fake news or misinformation on social media, the government plans to introduce drastic changes to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
The said switches aims to prosecute those who propagate “fake news”.
The amendments were confirmed by the Prime Minister’s adviser, Barrister Aqeel Malik, who affirmed that the provisions were being changed to eliminate misinformation and negative propaganda.
However, the prepared draft will allow the government to punish the culprits with 5 years in prison or a fine of Rs1 million.
A draft made by the concerned authorities suggested the formation of a Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA) that would deal with exaggerated online content, prosecution of the wrongdoer behind it, and action against those who share hyperbolic content.
Under the suggested changes, the government would set up a body which will have authorities currently exercised by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) under Peca.
The authority would have the right to advise the government on the “digital ethics and related fields”, relating to the promotion of social media platforms and ensure the safety of users from online harm.
DRPA will regulate social media content, hear complaints of violation of the act, and restrict or block users' access towards exaggerated content.
Following coming into power in February, the PM Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government was working to build consensus on the proposed draft.
However, the federal cabinet wanted discussion with stakeholders, including media houses, journalists’ bodies and political parties.
