YouTube has been making subtle adjustments to how it displays ads, sparking user concerns that the platform, owned by Google, might be trying to hide or remove the "skip" button.
Some desktop users noticed that the usual countdown timer for skippable ads was being replaced by black rectangles, while some mobile users reported the complete absence of a skip option.
According to Android Police, these changes have led to a debate, with frustrated users arguing that it’s becoming harder to bypass ads.
However, YouTube has addressed these concerns, denying the removal of the skip button. In a statement to The Verge, YouTube spokesperson Oluwa Falodun clarified that the platform is merely experimenting with the ad interface.
The company explained that while the skip button still exists, its visual presentation might look different. Falodun added that YouTube is reducing clutter on the ads player to create a "cleaner" viewing experience, which could involve the countdown timer being shown as a progress bar at the bottom of the screen.
While the skip option remains available, YouTube’s ongoing changes reflect a delicate balance between enhancing user experience and maximizing ad revenue.
The platform has increased the number of ads, such as those on the pause screen, and reduced content creators’ control over ad placement.
Additionally, YouTube is cracking down on ad blockers, making it more difficult for users to avoid ads. While YouTube Premium offers an ad-free option, its increasing cost may deter some users from subscribing.
