A statement issued by the Sindh Government on Sunday regarding the protection of animals and wildlife creatures. Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah has directed the Karachi Zoo authorities and the KMC to stop the breeding of big cats within the premises of Karachi Zoo.
However, the meeting was held between the KMC authorities, Karachi Zoo management, and related departments.
The main agenda of the meeting was to protect wildlife and exotic animals from mistreatment and to address the existing conditions at the zoo.
The action was taken after the birth of three cubs to a lioness last month at Karachi Zoo, which was a celebratory movement, but was later provoked with strong reactions due to the lack of facilities and improper treatment of animals there.
The chief secretary emphasizes the government’s dedication to the protection of wildlife animals and to providing the best protection needed.
He further noted that the uncontrollable breeding of exotic animals, especially big cats, creates a serious challenge for the welfare to manage and facilitate them with the basic needs required.
However, the KMC and Karachi Zoo authorities were ordered to stop the breeding immediately and to prepare a proper time-bound plan with the help of wildlife consultations.
He also stressed that the main focus should be on the protection of animal rights and proper treatment for them.
