Mohsin Naqvi, the Interim Chief Minister of Punjab, is reportedly in line to be nominated for the role of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, according to a Geo News report.
The official nomination is expected after approval from Patron-in-Chief (PCB) and caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar.
Naqvi will succeed Zaka Ashraf as the chairman of the PCB Management Committee in the Board of Governors after the approval.
Mohsin Naqvi, who is also a media channel owner and has been serving as the interim chief minister for a year, confirmed his upcoming appointment while addressing reporters in Lahore following the news release.
“I will try to fix the issues affecting Pakistan cricket. Reforms in cricket are the need of the hour,” Naqvi said.
Zaka Ashraf resigned from his position as the Chairman of the PCB Management Committee last Friday. The 72-year-old officially announced his resignation during the committee's meeting.
Ashraf initially joined the PCB's Board of Governors on July 6 and took over the role of Chairman, succeeding Najam Sethi on the same day.
As per the people present at an ongoing committee, he said, "I was working for the betterment of cricket but it is not possible for us to work in this way."
“Now it is up to Prime Minister [Kakar], whomever he nominates [will take my place],” he added.
Under Ashraf's leadership, Pakistan participated in two significant cricket tournaments—the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup. Unfortunately, the Men in Green faced challenges in both competitions.
They fell short of reaching the final in the Asia Cup and were unable to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
