US plans 30-year civilian nuclear pact with Saudi Arabia

The United States is expected to announce a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, according to multiple media reports, marking a significant step in bilateral energy ties amid renewed regional tensions.

The New York Times, citing two unnamed US officials, reported that the Trump administration plans to formally sign and announce the agreement with Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The deal is expected to provide billions of dollars in opportunities for the US nuclear industry.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the proposed 30-year agreement would allow American companies to build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia if a joint study concludes that such a project is justified.

Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that the Trump administration also plans to submit the agreement to Congress within days. The document, known as a "123 Agreement" under Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act of 1954, is expected to be signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.

The two sides signed a preliminary framework agreement in Riyadh last year. A 123 Agreement is required before the US government or American companies can cooperate with Saudi Arabia on the development of a civilian nuclear programme.
