A 35-year-old Afghan man stabbed three people at the central railway station in Würzburg in southern Germany, injuring them before bystanders and an off-duty police officer stopped him and held him until authorities arrived.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 7:50 a.m. local time inside the station’s main hall. The victims, men aged 68, 55 and 51, suffered minor injuries and were swiftly treated by emergency medical teams.

Officials reported that the attacker made stabbing motions toward a 68-year-old man and physically assaulted the other two victims before members of the public, including a police officer in plain clothes. The same police officer then intervened and restrained him.

Federal and local Würzburg police units arrived shortly after the first emergency call and took the suspect into custody.

Investigators have been launched into the attack, reviewing security camera footage from the station and visiting the suspect’s residence as they seek to establish a possible motive.

Furthermore, police has appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack or saw the man in the area beforehand to come forward with information.

Train services at Würzburg Central Station continued to operate normally after the brief disruption caused by the incident.
