A total of eight people were reportedly killed, while 25 more suffered injuries in a horrific accident when fire broke out due to collision between a train and public bus in Bangkok, Thailand.
Both firefighters and rescue services had rushed to put out the raging fires on the burning vehicles, they noted, stressing that the accident included a train, the bus, some cars and motorcycles.
"Eight people have died and 35 others were injured," Bangkok police chief Urumporn Koondejsumrit told reporters.
Teams of rescuers pulled out victims from the wreckage as firemen extinguished the flames from the burning vehicles amid efforts to douse the fire, authorities reported.
The blaze has been brought under control, where rescue personnel are still putting down the fires, releasing gases, and looking for more victims. Authorities stressed that the cause of the accident was still under investigation.
The accident occurred during the afternoon, where footage showed the train traveling in a relatively slow pace toward the level crossing until it struck the bus, immediately setting it ablaze.
"I didn’t even dare look back if there was anyone inside," one witness told the local news station Thai PBS.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an investigation into the incident, according to a statement from his office.
Deadly transport accidents are common in Thailand, which regularly tops lists of the world’s most lethal roads, with speeding, drink-driving and weak law enforcement all contributing factors.
