Italian police have arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the killing of four Pakistani farm workers whose bodies were found inside a burnt-out minivan in southern Italy, according to Corriere della Sera newspaper.
The incident took place near a petrol station close to the village of Amendolara in the Calabria region, an area known for its extensive farming activity.
The report said CCTV footage from the petrol station showed two individuals blocking the doors of the minivan from outside before pouring liquid inside the vehicle.
The footage reportedly captured the moment the fire broke out, after which the two suspects were seen fleeing the scene.
Firefighters later recovered the bodies from the burnt vehicle after extinguishing the blaze.
“This is definitely murder, we just have to work out the details,” local police chief Antonio Borelli was quoted as saying by Corriere della Sera.
The newspaper also reported that around 14 similar arson incidents involving vehicles carrying Pakistani workers had taken place in recent months in the same region.
It added that tensions in the area have been rising among migrant workers over access to farm jobs, residency documents and accommodation arrangements.
