Lebanon entered a new round of negotiations with Israel in Washington on Tuesday, seeking progress toward a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli military withdrawal from southern Lebanon despite growing concerns that the talks have been overshadowed by recent US-Iran diplomacy.
According to Reuters, Lebanese officials remain committed to direct negotiations with Israel, viewing them as the only viable path to ending months of conflict that intensified after Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in support of Iran.
The violence has left more than 4,000 people dead in Lebanon and caused widespread destruction.
However, four rounds of Lebanese-Israeli talks since April have failed to secure a durable ceasefire. The longest pause in fighting came only after Iran and the United States reached a memorandum of understanding that included a halt in hostilities across several regional fronts, including Lebanon.
Lebanese leaders have repeatedly insisted that Tehran cannot negotiate on Lebanon’s behalf. Officials fear the Iran-US agreement has weakened Beirut’s position by shifting attention away from its own diplomatic efforts with Israel.
During the three-day talks, Lebanon is expected to press for a clear and “reasonable” timetable for an Israeli military withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Israeli officials, however, have stated that troops may remain in the area indefinitely and continue to emphasize the disarmament of Hezbollah as a key condition for any lasting agreement.
Analysts warn that despite the recent reduction in violence; major differences remain between the two sides. Hezbollah has rejected calls for full disarmament and continues to oppose direct negotiations with Israel, while placing greater confidence in Iran’s parallel diplomatic track with Washington.
The outcome of the Washington talks is being closely watched as a test of whether diplomacy can deliver lasting stability to the region.
