Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has rewarded a citizen for his selfless act of bravery after he risked his life to drive a burning truck out of a gas station.
On the recommendation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the king approved the King Abdulaziz Medal (First Class) and a cash award of SR1 million ($267,000) for Maher Fahad Al-Dalbahi.
Al-Dalbahi, believed to be in his 40s, saw a truck engulfed in flames while travelling to his village of Al-Salihiya, some 300 kilometres from Riyadh, last Friday. The vehicle, carrying animal feed, had been abandoned by its driver after the fire broke out dangerously close to a petrol station.
Realising the imminent threat to lives and property, Al-Dalbahi took control of the truck and drove it to a safe distance, preventing what could have been a major catastrophe.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the act displayed “exceptional courage” and reflected values of sacrifice and public service held dear in the Kingdom.
Al-Dalbahi sustained severe burns to his hands, legs and face during the rescue and is currently receiving treatment at a Riyadh hospital.
His family described the royal recognition as a “great honour,” praising the leadership’s appreciation of citizens who demonstrate bravery and selflessness.
