A South Korean Army AH-1S Cobra attack helicopter crashed during a routine training flight in Gapyeong County, killing both crew members on board.
According to the South Korean army, the helicopter went down shortly after 11 a.m. for unknown reason. The two army officials on board were shifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to their injuries.
Furthermore, it was reported, the aircraft was engaged in emergency landing procedure training, a drill that involves simulating abnormal situations without shutting down the engine, when the accident occurred.
In response to the crash, the South Korean Army has suspended all operations of its AH-1S Cobra helicopters and set up an emergency response team to investigate the cause of the incident.
However, there were no reports of damage to civilians or property.
Defense officials have said the investigation will assess all factors, including technical issues and flight procedures, to determine what led to the fatal crash.
