US President Donald Trump has given Iran a clear deadline of 10 to 15 days to reach an agreement.
According to international media reports, Mr Trump warned that if Iran fails to enter negotiations within the stipulated timeframe, the United States could launch a major military strike.
Following the announcement of the deadline, US Air Force units stationed in Europe reportedly began repositioning towards Iran.
Increased activity has been observed at a US airbase on a Portuguese island, where fighter jets and supporting air assets have taken up positions in preparation for potential operations.
Meanwhile, the American newspaper The New York Times cautioned in a report that any US strike on Iran could have unpredictable consequences and risk pushing the entire Middle East towards a new conflict.
A day earlier, the British news agency Reuters claimed that the US President was considering directly targeting Iran’s senior leadership. Some reports have also referred to the possibility of limited strikes.
Those reports further suggested that Washington’s objective might extend beyond military action, potentially aiming to increase pressure on the Iranian government and encourage regime change.
There has so far been no official response from Tehran. However, Iranian officials have previously stated that any attack would be met with a firm and decisive response.
