On Saturday morning, Ukraine escalated the conflict by launching drone attacks deep into Russian territory, targeting Kazan, a city in the Tatarstan region, more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) from the front lines.
Tatarstan’s governor, Rustam Minnikhanov, reported that eight drones struck the city, with six hitting residential buildings, one targeting an industrial facility, and one being shot down over a river.
A video shared by local news channel Astra, verified by The Associated Press, shows a drone crashing into the upper floors of a high-rise building in Kazan. Despite the damage, local authorities reported no casualties from the attack.
As a result of the drone strikes, flights at Kazan International Airport were temporarily suspended, and all mass gatherings in the city were canceled for the weekend.
The attacks, which Ukraine has not officially confirmed in line with its security policy, followed a deadly Ukrainian missile strike on Friday in Russia's Kursk border region that left six people dead, including a child.
Meanwhile, Russian forces launched 113 drones into Ukraine overnight, with Ukrainian officials reporting that 57 of them were shot down and the remaining 56 likely jammed by electronic countermeasures.
The Kharkiv region in Ukraine also faced drone attacks on Friday night, leaving eight people wounded, as reported by the region's governor, Oleh Syniehubov.
