83-year-old Egyptian woman earns PhD in Sociology

CAIRO: An 83-year-old Egyptian woman has achieved a remarkable academic milestone by earning a PhD in Sociology, becoming an inspiring example of determination, perseverance and lifelong learning.

According to foreign media reports, Amal Ismail Abdo received her doctoral degree from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts, Mansoura University, after successfully completing her research thesis.

Abdo was awarded the PhD on July 5 in recognition of her academic work. Her educational journey began later in life, after facing several personal challenges.

According to reports, she passed her middle school examination at the age of 38, but her studies were interrupted after she was diagnosed with cancer. Following her recovery, she resumed her education and completed high school at the age of 68.

Three years later, she enrolled in the Sociology Department at Mansoura University’s Faculty of Arts. In 2023, she earned her master’s degree from the same institution with distinction before continuing her doctoral studies.

On July 6, Dakahlia Governor Major General Tarek Marzouk met Amal Abdo at the governorate headquarters and praised her achievement. The governor presented her with a shield in recognition of her extraordinary determination and ability to overcome life’s challenges.

The governor said Abdo’s success reflects the values of knowledge, commitment and perseverance, adding that her story sends a message of hope to younger generations and proves that age is never a barrier to achieving one’s dreams.

Expressing gratitude, Abdo said the honour was a great source of encouragement for her and a message to all those who continue pursuing their goals regardless of age or circumstances.
