Cassius, an Australian crocodile renowned for holding the Guinness World Record as the largest crocodile in captivity, passed away on Saturday at an estimated age of over 110, according to an announcement by Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat.

The massive saltwater crocodile, measuring 5.48 meters (18 feet) and weighing over a ton, had been in declining health since mid-October, as reported by the wildlife sanctuary on Facebook.

Located on Green Island near Cairns, Queensland, Marineland Melanesia expressed deep sadness, stating, “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”

Cassius was brought to the sanctuary in 1987 from the Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a prominent attraction.

He held the world record title after the death of Lolong, a Philippine crocodile measuring 6.17 meters (20 feet 3 inches), in 2013.

Cassius lived well beyond the typical lifespan of wild crocodiles, a testament to the sanctuary's care and his resilience.
