Bollywood actor and former BJP leader Paresh Rawal recently made a bizarre revelation, claiming he drank his own urine to treat a knee injury. His statement, made during a recent interview, quickly went viral, drawing widespread criticism on social media for promoting misleading and harmful practices instead of encouraging proper medical treatment.
According to Indian media, during the filming of Ghatak, Paresh Rawal injured his knee during an action scene and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. However, the injury was serious and required several months of recovery.
Rawal said he was terrified at the time, fearing his acting career might come to an abrupt end.
During his hospital stay, late action director Veeru Devgan, father of actor Ajay Devgan, visited Rawal and gave him unconventional advice, drink his own urine on an empty stomach to speed up recovery.
"All fighters do this, you will not have any problem," Rawal quoted Devgan as saying. Devgan also advised him to avoid alcohol, red meat, and tobacco, recommending instead a simple diet along with the urine therapy.
Rawal admitted that although he found the advice strange and was initially reluctant, he eventually convinced himself to try it. “I decided that if I had to drink my own urine, I wouldn’t gulp it down, I would sip it like beer. Because I wanted to do it properly. I did this for 15 days," he said.
Fifteen days later, when doctors examined his X-ray, they were reportedly shocked by the rapid improvement. "The doctor asked me, ‘How did this cementing happen?’ He could see a white line forming. I was supposed to be discharged in 2-2.5 months, but I was discharged in 1.5 months. It was like magic," Rawal claimed.
However, health experts and medical professionals have repeatedly emphasised that there are no proven scientific benefits to drinking urine for any health condition.
“Please don't drink your urine (or others) because a Bollywood actor says so,” a hepatologist warned on X.
“In fact, consuming urine can be harmful, potentially introducing bacteria, toxins, and other harmful substances into the bloodstream. Your kidneys work very hard to remove toxic stuff out of your body through urine. Don't insult it by putting it back in.” he added.
“Just for a moment think of this video from the perspective of someone who’s not normalized into this culture. A man, rather famous man, casually talking about drinking urine as a virtue. Do you for a moment can’t see how extremely weird this is?” another X user said.
“I am speechless .. disgusted but confused, unable to understand. This guy, a huge Indian celeb is actually promoting drinking urine, on TV!!!!!!” another user wrote.
