A rare, one-in-a-billion egg with a perfect spherical shape was presented at an auction in the UK and sold for £200 (Rs70,965) due to its uniqueness.
Eggs are a staple in many households because of their nutritional value and versatility in cooking. Typically, they are considered one of the cheapest and most affordable food items, but this extraordinary egg set itself apart from the rest.
The rare find shattered the perception of eggs as an affordable food item, proving that their value can skyrocket in unique circumstances.
This particular egg was owned by Ed Pownell from Lambourn in Berkshire, who initially purchased it for £150 (Rs53,223). However, he later donated the egg to a foundation in Oxfordshire that provides mental health support.
When the foundation first received the donation, they thought it was a joke. However, they decided to present the egg at an auction.
“We’re delighted and thrilled the egg sold as it means we can continue to do what we are doing," Roz Rapp from the foundation told BBC.
“The money raised will help 13-25-year-olds struggling with their mental health. It will enable us to reach more youths who need support or are on long waiting lists," he further said.
He added that the auction raised a total of £5,000 for the charity, as several other items, alongside the rare egg, were presented for bidding to contribute to the cause.
