A South American country has announced to distribute $478 (over 132,000 PKR) to all its citizens at home and abroad. The generous initiative is available for all the citizens who are 18 years of age or above.
Guyana, which has recently seen an economic boom due to its oil exports, will allocate this amount from the proceeds of its crude oil sales.
Each eligible citizen aged 18 and above will receive 100,000 Guyanese dollars. To claim the money, they will only need to present their passport or identity card.
This initiative extends to Guyanese citizens living overseas, although they will need to return to the country to claim their share.
In a statement, Guyana's President Irfan Ali said. "“Over the past week, thousands of Guyanese have engaged me and members of my cabinet, providing extremely favourable feedback on the measures announced last Thursday … several persons have indicated to my government the complications they foresee in the implementation of this much-welcomed benefit and the fear of being left out.”.
Initially, the government had planned to distribute 200,000 Guyanese dollars to each family, but this decision was revised after feedback from citizens.
Some young people, who don’t have family expressed concerns that they would be excluded from the aid.
To address these concerns, President Ali explained, "Making everyone eligible for this program will ensure that young people also benefit."
Guyana's indigenous population of 800,000 and diaspora of 400,000 is set to benefit from this program, and receive financial aid.
Once among the region's poorest countries, Guyana’s economy has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past five years.
The discovery of vast crude oil reserves in 2015 has turned the nation’s fortunes around, catapulting it to become one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
