K-Electric has announced a major decision to permanently shut down two of its gas-fired power plants in the city.

According to a letter sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, the Korangi Town Gas Turbine Power Station and the SITE Gas Turbine Power Station will be decommissioned permanently.

The letter stated that the company’s Board of Directors has approved the closure of both power stations, and K-Electric will also approach NEPRA for formal approval of the permanent shutdown.

The decision was made due to non-availability of local gas and the failure of relying on imported LNG.

K-Electric added that the closure of these plants will not affect the city’s electricity supply, as the 900MW Bin Qasim Power Plant has already been made operational to meet demand.
