Ministers explain eligibility, registration process for PM’s fuel subsidy scheme

Federal ministers Attaullah Tarar, Shaza Fatima Khawaja and Ali Pervaiz Malik on Monday explained how the prime minister’s fuel subsidy scheme will be implemented, outlining its eligibility requirements, registration process and expected cost.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, they said that the scheme would cover two-wheelers, three-wheelers and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima said that owners of two- and three-wheelers would receive relief on up to 20 litres of petrol, while those using vehicles of up to 800cc would be eligible for the subsidy on up to 30 litres.

How to register

Shaza Fatima said that the programme would be implemented in two stages, with registration being the first step. Users must send an SMS to 9771 from the mobile number registered against their CNIC. The message should contain:

REG [CNIC number] [province first letter] [vehicle registration date]For example, a resident of Sindh should use S as the province code. After registration, users can visit a petrol station and send TOK to 9771.

They will receive a token, which they must show at the petrol station to avail the subsidy.

The minister advised citizens not to share their CNIC numbers or any other personal information with anyone. She said the government would not ask citizens for any additional data or charges under the scheme. She added that any issues or errors in the system would be identified and fixed.

According to the government, residents of Islamabad will be able to avail the petrol relief from midnight between September 14 and 15. The scheme will be available across the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from midnight between September 16 and 17.
