In a case concerning the collection of municipal tax, the petitioner revealed in court that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has so far collected Rs2.64 billion from citizens through electricity bills.

During the hearing at the Sindh High Court, on a petition challenging the inclusion of municipal tax in K-Electric bills, the petitioner’s counsel informed the court that a total of Rs2.64 billion has been collected through these charges.

He argued that only government bodies are authorized to collect taxes, and no third party can collect revenue on their behalf.

The lawyer further stated that the imposition of MUCT (Municipal Utility Charges and Taxes) violates the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2013, adding that NEPRA has also declared the collection of KMC tax through K-Electric as illegal.

He accused Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab of defying the court’s accused orders issued on May 29, 2024.
