After fuel prices increase, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) approved on Monday a significant hike in electricity tariffs just days before the upcoming Eidul Fitr festivities.

According to the notification, the cost of electricity has surged by a staggering Rs 4.92 per unit, effective immediately.

The decision, reportedly stemming from adjustments made in February's monthly fuel assessment, has triggered outrage among citizens who view it as an imposition of undue financial burdens.

Expressing their dismay, many have characterized the move as the government dropping "electric bombs" on the populace, particularly as it coincides with preparations for Eid celebrations.

However, Nepra has clarified that the tariff hike will not apply to Lifeline customers and consumers of Kelectric, offering some respite to the most vulnerable segments of society.

Nevertheless, the additional burden imposed on other consumers is expected to reflect in their upcoming April bills.
