Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif officially launched the CM Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme on Friday, aimed at providing lasting relief to residents from high electricity costs.
Under this initiative, 100,000 solar systems will be installed across the province over the next year for eligible consumers.
The scheme is designed to benefit electricity consumers who use up to 200 units per month. Consumers will receive free solar systems based on their monthly consumption.
Those consuming up to 100 units per month will receive a 550-watt solar system, while consumers using up to 200 units will receive an 1100-watt system.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif added that this scheme, along with previous subsidies that benefited 7.3 million consumers at Rs. 14 per unit, demonstrates the government’s commitment to easing the electricity burden for Punjab residents.
Consumers can register for the scheme through an online portal at "cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk" or by sending an SMS to 8800.
The registration process will involve verification through consumers' reference numbers and CNICs on their monthly electricity bills. A computerized ballot will be conducted to ensure transparency in the selection process.
The scheme will not only provide cost-effective solar energy to residents but also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 57,000 tons.
To further secure the solar systems, they will be linked to the consumer’s CNIC to prevent theft of the solar panels and inverters.
In addition to the installation, a dedicated helpline will be set up to guide and assist consumers throughout the process.
The scheme is also expected to reduce the subsidy burden on the federal government by decreasing the demand for conventional electricity.
